Why choose .com for a company or startup
To me, .com has a worldwide-business meaning. The ending leaves room for a company to change its products over time. The word before it still needs to suit what the business does.
I see .ai as a fit for a product where artificial intelligence does the work. A .com can still name an AI business: the name itself can carry that meaning. RetinolAI.com is one example from the collection.
Google describes .com as a generic ending in its geographic-targeting guidance, checked on 13 October 2026. That does not give a website a ranking promise. A worldwide address and a website that serves worldwide customers are different things.
For the choice between two endings, use the separate .ai vs .com guide or .co vs .com guide. Before buying, check existing uses of the name with the name check guide.
Companies using .com
- Apple uses apple.com for its products and online store.
- Microsoft uses microsoft.com for its software, cloud services and devices.
- Stripe uses stripe.com for its payment and business software.
These are the companies’ main public websites, checked on 13 October 2026.
What .com means
.com began as the commercial category in the internet’s domain system. The October 1984 specification sets out that original meaning. It explains the letters, rather than today’s registration rules.
Today, IANA’s record lists .com as a generic domain ending. It is separate from country-code endings such as .co and .si.
Who runs .com, and who you buy from
Verisign runs the .com registry. A registrar is the company that manages your registration account. Verisign explains how registrars register names for individuals, businesses and organisations. These roles were checked on 13 October 2026.
The seller of an already-owned name is a third role. Onomora sells names from my collection; it does not run the .com registry or offer a domain-registration service. A marketplace handles the purchase route shown on each sale page.
What a .com domain costs
The cost depends first on whether the exact name is available to register or already held by someone. A registrar gives a registration price for an available name. An existing holder sets a separate sale price or asks for an offer. A cheap registration advert does not price a domain that someone already owns.
Compare the renewal price as well as the first payment. Check the currency, taxes and any mandatory fees in the actual checkout, and ask whether a promotional first-year price changes on renewal. My guide to buying a premium domain covers the purchase process.
What you get when you buy a .com
A domain sale transfers control of the agreed registration. It does not automatically include a finished website, hosting or an email service. ICANN’s explanation makes that distinction. Ask for the included assets to be written into the sale terms.
The registration must then stay current. ICANN’s renewal guidance explains that missing renewal can put control of the name at risk. Check the expiry date and who will manage renewals after delivery.
Owning one exact address also does not give you the same word on every ending. A .com and its matching .co or .ai are separate registrations.

Common questions
What does .com stand for?
The original domain specification used COM for the commercial category. Today, IANA records .com as a generic domain ending managed by Verisign.
Can an individual hold a .com domain?
Yes. Verisign describes registration for individuals, businesses and organisations through registrars. The name must be available, and the registrar’s terms still apply.
Does buying a .com include a website?
A domain purchase gives you control of the agreed domain registration. Website content, hosting and email services are separate unless the sale agreement includes them. Check exactly what the seller is transferring.
Can I buy a .com forever?
A .com registration needs renewal. ICANN explains that keeping the registration current is the holder’s responsibility. Paying an existing owner does not remove that ongoing cost.
